Established in 1907, Tongji University is one of the Class A universities in the World-leading University Construction Program of China. Course Description

Public building is the most common building type in our daily life as well as the container of the urban public life. Following the population and technology growth, the large public building is becoming the important part of the urban development, thus an important opportunity to change human’s lifestyle. Today, to take the large public building as the research object, to study their develop history, to discriminate different theories and thoughts, to review the gains and losses in different typical cases, and then, to prospect the future development is good to help students to start a preliminary thinking of the rule and trend of contemporary large public building and even the future city. This course is mainly focused on four topics: higher, bigger, more complex and denser, and introduces the main develop stages and theories of the world wide large public building as well as discusses the future development of high density sustainable vertical city. Despite of 4 topic lectures, this course arranges 5 special lectures to analyze the typical large public buildings in history. This course also arranges 3 case study courses, which allows students to share their research about the typical cases and discuss with classmates and teacher, and 1 field trip, which brings student to visit and investigate the real projects in the lecture within Shanghai urban context.

Course Description

Traffic Engineering is a basic professional course for traffic engineering, civil engineering and other majors. The course covers the basic theories, key technologies and applications of traffic engineering in the modern social environment, including the composition and characteristics of the transportation system, the fundamental model of traffic flow, traffic system planning, traffic network design, traffic management, transportation policy, transportation environment, and transportation information, etc.  The main objectives of this course are various types of traffic phenomena and problems on urban roads, public transit, bicycles, walking and other transportation facilities networks. It also puts forward traffic service goals of mobility, accessibility and fairness, and teaches how to give solution by applying integrated approaches.

Course Description

The course is an elective course for students in the traffic engineering major, aiming at foreign students and Chinese students who want to improve their specialized English level in the field of traffic management and control. The course aims to discuss about how to improve the efficiency and safety of the current transportation system by using traffic management and control technology scientifically. The course includes traffic management poicy and technology, basic ideas of isolated signal control, corridor and area signal coordination, and smart vehicles/roads in the future.

Course Description

This course is to integrate the traffic engineering and road engineering basic concepts, basic knowledge and basic skills in the professional course, which trains students using natural science, traffic engineering, civil engineering, humanities and social science knowledge together, to analyze the characteristic and problems of the intelligent transportation system and wisdom road, then to form a systemic concept. Students are required to master the connotation of intelligent transportation infrastructure and its relationship with materials, energy, environment, people and vehicles, understand and master the connotation and extension of safe, fast and clean intelligent transportation infrastructure, and understand its intelligent management mode and management system.

Course Description

This course is delivered in English. The main objective is to train the students with the ability to analyze transportation systems quantitatively and qualitatively. It mainly covers two main parts: traffic flow theory, and the fundamental theories and methods of systems engineering. The former parts includes the basic variables of characterizing traffic flows, traffic flow models, capacity and level of service, time-space diagram, queuing theory, car following model, and shockwave theory. The latter part includes typical evaluation methods, optimization methods, prediction methods, and decision-making methods.
