Founded in 1871 as a medical school, and later designated a national university in 1947, Nagoya University is now one of Japan’s leading higher education institutions, known for its research excellence. It is a comprehensive university that includes 13 graduate schools, 9 undergraduate schools, three research institutes and 18 research centers. Currently, the total number of students is 16,000, of which 2,700 are international.

Nagoya University is located in the Greater Nagoya Area of central Japan, the nation’s third largest metropolitan area, and its primary manufacturing belt. The university’s free and open academic culture has been the springboard for many remarkable research achievements. Course Description

Differential geometry plays a central role in many physical theory, as for example in classical mechanics, in solid states physics or in general relativity. During this one semester course, many essential notions will be introduced, among them the definitions of a manifold, of the curvature, of the parallel transport, of the holonomy, etc. By attending this course, students will get familiar with these notions, and will master the fundamental difference between extrinsic and intrinsic geometrical properties.

Course Description

Studium Generale A course offers exposure to academic topics in the field of natural sciences, presented at an introductory level. The goal is to expose students to topics outside their major or research field, to different ideas – from both the speakers and other participants. Students will increase their understanding and appreciation of wide range of scientific fields in natural sciences. Students will gain experience discussing with participants from other majors and countries.

Course Description

This course aims to provide students with the necessary information and training to support their career development in the areas of biotechnology and biology after graduation from the university. The students will be able to interact with instructors, classmates, and guests with diverse careers from all parts of the world. In addition, this course is run as part of the COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) program with North Carolina State University, to provide the students with more opportunities for professional development, interaction, and networking. The course is very interactive and, besides guidance on preparation of a CV/resume, and cover letter, includes career panels, mock interviews, and peer review sessions.

Points to Note for Students

Teaching materials:
We will use TACT (Tokai Academic Combination Tools) to distribute all course-related materials, including recorded lecture videos and handouts, and for relevant communication. TACT will also be used for uploading and submission of the homework.

Course format:
- Asynchronous: Recorded lectures will be available via TACT one day before the schedule. On the day of the lecture, you are expected to watch the lecture in the morning and work on your assignments. You are strongly encouraged to communicate with the instructors (by email or scheduled meeting) to clarify the lecture contents and any issues related to your homework or discuss any related topic.
- Synchronous: The class will be held from 10:30-11:30 every Wednesday unless otherwise specified, on-site or via Zoom, as indicated by the schedule which will be announced later.
